Longtime Mancos resident Morris Hostetter Cunningham, 88, died peacefully in his sleep at his winter home in Arizona City, Ariz., on March 24, 2014.

A funeral was held Friday, March 28, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Casa Grande Stake Center.

Morris was born March 6, 1926, in Sanford, Colo., son of Charles W. and Sylvia G. Cunningham.

He earned a bachelor's at Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz., and a master's degree in education from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

He was an elementary school teacher and principal primarily in Farmington, N.M. He was also a carpenter, personally overseeing the building of 16 homes. He enjoyed fishing especially at Duck, Tobacco, Williams lakes and Trujillo Meadows in southern Colorado. A member of the LDS Church, he served in various callings and attended the Mancos Ward. Favorite sports teams were the BYU Cougars, Denver Broncos, and Phoenix Suns.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Colleen Cunningham; three sons and a daughter, Michael W. Dynes of Richmond, Texas, Kelly M. Cunningham of San Diego, Calif., Kathy A. Evans of Provo, Utah, and C. Kim Cunningham of Arizona City, Ariz.; two sisters, LaVon Culler of Farmington, N.M., and Dora Gay Anderson of Alamosa, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
